NLV vs Digital Nomad Visa — which is right for you?
Both permits allow you to live in Spain. The key difference: whether you work remotely for foreign clients.

| Working for Spanish clients | ||
| Remote work for foreign clients | ||
| Minimum income required | €28,800/year | €28,000/year |

* NLV strictly prohibits any lucrative activity. If you work remotely, even for foreign clients, you need the Digital Nomad Visa. Consult us if you're unsure which permit applies to your situation.
Frequently asked questions
Can I work remotely from Spain on a Non-Lucrative Visa?
No. The NLV explicitly prohibits any lucrative activity in Spain. If you work remotely — even for foreign clients, even as a freelancer — you technically need the Digital Nomad Visa (DNV), not the NLV. Many people make this mistake. It's an important legal distinction: working remotely while on an NLV puts you at risk of losing your residency and incurring fines.
Does the Non-Lucrative Visa give right to work?
No right to work for any employer (Spanish or foreign). You can receive passive income — investments, pensions, dividends, rental income — but not salary, freelance income or business income generated while you are in Spain. If your situation changes and you want to work, you would need to switch to an appropriate work permit.
Where do I apply for the NLV?
At the Spanish consulate in your country of residence. You cannot switch from a tourist visa or Schengen stay to an NLV while inside Spain. You must apply before entering Spain on the NLV. Different consulates have different processing times and documentation requirements — we advise on the specifics for your consulate.
How long does approval take?
Typically 1-3 months at the consulate. Some consulates are faster (Mexico City: 4-6 weeks) while others are slower (London: 2-4 months in recent experience). Allow extra time to gather and apostille all documents — criminal records and medical certificates from multiple countries can take several weeks each.
